Understory Layer of Thai Contemporary Art World: Exploring relationships in the contemporary art world from a database of 857 group exhibitions in Thailand. An exhibition by the Canopy Project. Beyond beauty and aesthetic values, Thai contemporary art seeks to reflect, critique, interpret, adapt, and depict social issues of their respective time period through artworks. In this way, it helps to ignite discussions and stimulate debates on more controversial topics in the wider society. Tracing the history of exhibitions allows us to understand the complex structure of the art world and its relevant parties beyond just artists. More importantly, the approach helps to shed light on an intricate interconnection between art and other social dimensions, both in the past and future. The Canopy Project sets out to gather and analyse data on group exhibitions of Thai contemporary art from 1975 to 2022, aspiring to explore the roles of different actors and components involved in the conception and actualisation of exhibitions, including art spaces, art techniques, curators, and social context. This series of infographics titled “Understory Layer of Thai Contemporary Art Word” invites you to explore the analysis of data in five key dimensions: 1. Art spaces 2. Art techniques 3. Curators 4. Sponsors 5. Social context

A curator is the person who oversees the selection and interpretation of artworks. In the realm of contemporary art, curators play a crucial role in bringing large-scale exhibitions and art festivals to life before the eyes of the public through a curatorial process. In the Thai contemporary art world, curators have begun to gain prominence in group exhibitions since 1996. A total of 148 curators were part of group exhibitions, of whom 104 were Thai, and 44 were foreign nationals. In addition, they were featured in 128 exhibitions in Bangkok Metropolitan Region and in 20 exhibitions in Chiang Mai.
